New Chabad in historic Ottawa building offers a home to decades-old Jewish library
The Canadian Jewish News,Wednesday, June 10, 2026
The opening of a new Chabad building in Ottawa has brought almost 15,000 library books back to the capital’s Jewish community after they spent nearly a decade in storage. Chabad of Wellington West was founded in 2022 by Ottawa-born Rabbi Moshe Caytak and his wife, Sheina Caytak, when they moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ottawa with their three-month-old son. The couple co-directed the centre in their home for several years, inviting some of the neighbourhood’s 600 Jewish households to Shabbat and holiday dinners. Rabbi Caytak says they’ve raised around $1.7 million to open the new centre.

Journalist Nikki Goldstein chronicles her spiritual transformation following a near-death experience, sharing how a rabbi she had never met stood by her ICU bedside, prayed over her, and sparked a miraculous recovery. Nikki and Rabbi Eli Schlanger formed an extraordinary friendship while co-authoring their book, Conversations with My Rabbi: Timeless Teachings for a Fractured World. After Rabbi Eli was tragically killed in a terror attack during a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in 2025, Nikki was steadfast in her mission to complete their project and ensure his message survives.
